a) How many bicycle thefts there are
b) The ridiculous risk of packing valuables in your luggage
c) How obvious that this is a bike to a baggage handler
Because I seriously doubt this fits in an overhead bin. #cycling
@blash: It may be possible for an entire bike to be stolen, but unless you fly The Airline Bubba Done Built Airways, it's likely you'll not have much to worry about. I have a feeling a baggage handler would not be as eager to snatch something that big, unless you're flying out of the Disputed Zone. #cycling
I don't think anybody cut from much "lesser cloth" would even consider buying this thing. If they're riding Huffy's (or anything NOT carbon/aluminum), then they probably don't want to bother dis/assembling their bike. Nor would they shell out the money for this thing, as spiffy as it is.
Oh for fuck's sake! Whatever happened to the right of passage of getting nicked up shins and knees while learning how to ride? I remember back in the day learning how to ride on my Huffy banana seat bike and banging up my shins pretty good. I had not mastered the art of braking and my pedals where made of metal and they'd bang against my shins after I put my feet on the ground at the end of stopping. It was no biggie. Plus there's something about having your dad holding the back of your bike pushing you along and making sure you don't fall. I'd rather have those memories than one sitting in front of a screen. #hondabicyclesimulator
@UGAdawg: I think this is more for simulating a controlled situation to teach kids how to handle traffic situations while riding. I can't imagine this machine teaches a kid to balance a "2-wheeler" properly
@UGAdawg: Absolutely, but some parents will go to great lengths to automate something instead of spending time with their kids. Also, as the threads below suggest, maybe some adults aren't the best role models from which to learn rules. I'm all for personal responsibility, as well as letting parents raise their children, but if this method keeps kids from getting hit on their bikes, or gives them the confidence to get outside and ride their bikes, I'm for it. #hondabicyclesimulator
You know, I get so sick of seeing grown adults riding bikes on the sidewalks. Kids don't need this; adults do. I say we make anyone over the age of 15 who is caught braking traffic laws while on a bike, take mandatory lessons on this. #hondabicyclesimulator
@Software_Goddess: I say anyone breaking traffic laws on a bicycle over the age of 15 get put in a wooden stock and get pummeled with rotten tomatoes. #hondabicyclesimulator
@Software_Goddess: also, biking on the wrong side of the road is also really annoying. A bicycle is a vehicle, you bike on the RIGHT side of the road (unless you live in England or one of the other countries where you drive on the left).
But worst of all is the drivers who simply refuse to acknowledge that people are biking, and will either cut them off or force the cyclist to brake/swerve wildly to avoid being run over or running into the car. #hondabicyclesimulator
@headc4se: Oh I had no idea we could make up our own rules! Let me try: Oh since I'm faster on my motorcycle than just about anything else, I have the right of way. Or, since when on the bicycle, I consume no gas or produce no emmisions I have the right of way.
Or hey, I like this one best - Since 99% of roads gets funded by property taxes all you renters can get the f*ck off my roads. #hondabicyclesimulator
@Lizard_King: I do like the rule about the motorcycles, since I usually do give myself the right of way when I'm riding, safely of course. Since you don't produce any emissions on a bicycle, I would have to take your right of way since idling isn't bad for the environment. Unfortunately, the whole renter thing doesn't work, since rent does include something towards property taxes, etc.. #hondabicyclesimulator
this is it. this is the starting point in which family life is destroyed. where the bronze of technology fills the fabric of human connection and love.
@bigpolla: Learning to trust the machines at an early age will be our downfall.
Seriously though, the family-time element of learning to ride is often removed when the parents decide to hire the guy at the local bike shop to teach their kid to ride. #hondabicyclesimulator
I would like this without the turn signal option. I don't want to fumble with that when arm signals are much easier and what driver are used to looking for. But a brake light, that's fantastic. #spooklightaccelerometerlight
@Neal Spinler: So it's easier to take your hand off the handlebar and signal than to move your thumb two inches in either direction? What do your arms look like? #spooklightaccelerometerlight
@Stuart Axel Owen: Well, I walk with two LED flashing lights when I go walking. According to people I know, you can see them from about 1/2 mile off, so you see the flashing before you even see me. So yes, much like I notice them on cars and motorcycles, I would notice them here.
I remember reading an article in either Scientific American or Discover magazine where they were discussing making brake lights flash a certain pattern which makes the brain believe an object is coming at it, so it elicits a faster response. IIRC, they were thinking of putting it on buses so that in crowded streets, with constant stop and go, it would help avoid accidents. I wish I could find it or at least see if they ever put it in a product. #spooklightaccelerometerlight
On the geeky side, any idea whether an accelerometer uses energy as it is waiting for a change to communicate?
The battery life on this is quite good and the design concept is fantastic. I am cheapskate, but when the price comes down on this concept I would make the investment for my late night bike rides to Taco Bell. #spooklightaccelerometerlight

I think bicycles should be banned from city streets. They're a menace to pedestrians and drivers alike.
