SOLD!

And, does it all without the usual stigma that affects these kinds of devices—utter butt-ugliness. It's a bit bulky, to be sure, but thanks to some solid Japanese ingenuity it's finally something I feel confident bringing into public for another of my infamous "photos of things you can never take back" field assignments.

As for the specs, the MP4 sports a 1.8-inch color screen (160x128), supports MP3 and WPA, WMA audio, and can display JPG or text files. A video camera mode recordsin 352x288, while the photo mode is 640x480. [Akihabara]

<![CDATA[JWD Media-Playing Alarm With Radio, Chumby for Cheapos?]]> This little box from JWD does pack in a fair number of functions: 2-inch 220 x 176 TFT screen, built-in lithium battery, speakers, 1GB of memory, MP3, WMA and MP4 playback, FM radio and alarm clock. It can even record the radio or a line-in audio source, and has an SD slot for expansion. It doesn't have a touchscreen or Wi-Fi, but this Chumbyesque device is at least fairly reasonably priced: $88 for one, with discounts if you buy in bulk. [Shopkami via Chipchick]

<![CDATA[Racing Rim Camera Is Clock, Spy Cam, MP4 Player, Impossibly Fugly]]> I'm not quite sure I've got this right, but this here thingy is a remote-controlled clock-MP4 player-hidden camera. Apparently it's a product that can be used for "any purpose you can think of, without anyone ever being the wiser." ¿Qué? The built-in camera is PAL and NTSC-compatible, there is 128MB of flash memory, as well as an SD card slot and USB 2.0.

racing-rim-camera-3.jpgEven the girl in the pic is looking confused. The Tire-Clock-Camera-MP4-player combo is $217. Yeah, still baffled here. [ChinaVisionTechpin]

<![CDATA[Did The PS3 2.2 Firmware Update Break MP4 Streaming?]]> Just days after Sony released its new PlayStation 3 firmware update, people are already pointing out new problems it's caused rather than fixed. Users on the U.S. PlayStation board are reporting that 2.2 is making all of their streaming MP4s st-st-stutter, rendering them almost completely unplayable.

Forum members have already ruled out the possibility of it being a connection issue (higher bitrate DivX/XviDs stream just fine), and folks over at Tversity are saying it isn't a media server issue either — one guy apparently tested Tversity, Twonky Media and Nero Home Media. All are stuttering like crazy after the firmware update.

Other problems forum members have come across:
•10x, 30x and 120x speeds for MPEG2s stream at only 1/10 or so the usual frame rate (regular MPEG2 streaming works fine though)
•Skipping over unwanted content "became very hard to do"

What gives Sony? Don't you test this stuff out before releasing it to the public?

<![CDATA[Soda Can MP4 is Not All That Refreshing]]> As you might have guessed, the NXMP324 from Neux Corp is not what I would call a "serious" product, but those looking for something a little different may find its support for MP3, WMA, WMV, WAV and ASF file formats, built-in USB 2.0 port, FM radio, and 128MB to 4GB capacities mildly interesting. Not me though—I'm still holding out for the MP4 shaped like a bottle of Thunderbird in a paper bag. Pricing info available upon request. [Globalsources via PMP Today]

<![CDATA[Epoq Classes Up MP4 Watches With Stainless Steel]]> Most MP4 watches look fantastic if you're 12 years old and really love plastic and rubber watches, but Epoq's latest MP4 watch brings a slight bit of class to the video watch business. <![CDATA[Sharp's Korean Super Dictionary Doubles as PMP]]> Sharp's new RD-CX300 may actually be a pocket dictionary worth buying. While Webster has dominated the market for years, filling our heads with useless, 5+ syllable words, Sharp has finally found the dictionary's long latent potential: a video player.

This "multimedia super dictionary" stores 20GB of useless words, MP3s, MPEG4s and WMVs. Plus, it packs full QWERTY, an SD slot and voice recording. The 4.3" TFT 260K-color display is just enough power to support the black and white nature of print, especially if you are using the built-in ebook functionality.

Our photo is of a predecessor that should be similar to the new $500, 1.2" thick model when it's released this month in Korea. A tiny picture on Sharp's site shows the RD-CX300 could come in red. Oooohhh.

Available in either white or chrome and 1GB or 2GB versions, there's a miniSD Memory Card slot to give you up to 4GB memory space. It's quite cute—the buttons down the side are very retro—but it's too small for my liking.

The gizmoito also has FM radio and a built-in speaker and will cost you $99.99 for the 1GB version and $139.99 for the 2GB. Accessories include stereo headphones, USB cable, CD driver and AC charger. Full specs are after the jump.

<![CDATA[Brando Soap MP4 Player: Good Clean Fun?]]> Brando rolled out a digital media player that's low-priced ($99) but still holds two gigs of your favorite songs in its flash memory. It's aptly named the Soap MP4, because it looks like a bar of soap after you've used it for a week or two. Oh, I mean, it must have good clean sound.

It works like an iPod, plugging into USB, but it brings more features as well, such as an OLED color screen, FM radio, voice recording and the ability to watch MPEG4 movies. Here's another pic of the white player with its black brother, plus a bit of harmless scatological humor:

For some reason this player reminded us of that bar of soap that looks like poop. At this low $99 price, we're wondering if this is poop that looks like a bar of soap.

<![CDATA[Brando MP4 Watch - Video Killed the MP3 Star]]> The Brando MP4 watch is a chunky, geeky fashion statement that's actually packing some impressive features. Syncing with via USB, the watch can store MP3s, WMAs and MP4 video on its 1GB of built-in memory. Playback occurs on a small 128x128 pixel screen, but appears in a potential 65k colors. Plus, you can even record audio on the fly - for up to 8 hours.

We like the orange version quite a bit, as well as the gorgeous $98 pricetag. I hereby name this watch the perfect stocking stuffer for the upcoming holiday season. And you'll need to buy a few of them, because I celebrate Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa/The Chinese New Year/MarkDay. I'm very spiritual. Hit the jump for the complete gallery.

<![CDATA[Anlong MP4 Watch]]>

Forget those dated MP3 watches that are so 2005, Shenzhen Adragon Digitek is offering an Anlong MP4 wristwatch. Pretend you are just checking the time as you tune out the ramblings of bosses/children/firemen to watch your favorite soccer team score a goal.

The watch is water and shockproof and can play video for 9 hours, though the storage capacity is still unknown. Content is loaded via USB 2.0. We will probably see both Mac and PC support if the rest of the manufacturer's line is any indication. No price yet.

<![CDATA[Maplin A93GC MP4 Player Attempts to Challenge iPod nano, Probably Fails]]> Maplin is positioning the A93GC MP4 player as a potential iPod nano killer, which is like saying Hillary wants to be president—we know that already. What we don't know, however, is how Maplin intends to accomplish this small feat. So far, the only, you know, facts we know are that it'll cost some $112 when it's released in the beginning of November. Afterwards, its price will skyrocket to around $190 before the end of the year. Good idea all around.

We can, however, do a little prognosticating based on Maplin's history: right now, the rumor around the water cooler is that it'll come with a pedestrian 2GB of flash memory and a 1.5-inch display. Take that, nano!

We'll let you know when Apple throws in the towel and bows to the awesome might that is the Maplin A93GC if and when it's released on this side of the Sea of Atlas.
